15 Proven Ways to Slash Your UPPCL Electricity Bill

Practical, actionable tips to keep your household consumption in the lower tariff slabs and avoid expensive peak slab surcharges.

1

Set Your AC to 24°C – 26°C

According to the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), every 1°C increase in your air conditioner’s set temperature saves approximately 6% electricity. Running an AC at 18°C instead of 24°C can double your power consumption because the compressor never cuts off during hot Uttar Pradesh summers.

2

Upgrade to Brushless DC (BLDC) Ceiling Fans

Standard induction ceiling fans consume 70W to 80W of power. Modern 5-Star BLDC motor fans consume only 28W to 32W at top speed. In a house with 4 fans running 12 hours a day, switching to BLDC saves over 70 units (kWh) per month, easily saving ₹400 to ₹500 every billing cycle.

3

Stay Below the 150-Unit & 300-Unit Thresholds

Because UPPCL tariff rates are progressive, once your consumption crosses 150 units in urban areas, the rate jumps from ₹5.50 to ₹6.00, and above 300 units it rises to ₹6.50. Keeping an eye on your meter reading around the 25th of each month can help you avoid spilling into higher slabs.

4

Install Rooftop Solar under PM Surya Ghar Yojana

The Government of India and UP state provide up to ₹78,000 subsidy for installing a 3 kW rooftop on-grid solar system. With net metering enabled by UPPCL, excess power generated during sunny days is sent back into the grid, effectively reducing your electricity bill to nearly zero (only minimum fixed charges).

5

Prevent Sanctioned Load Overload Penalties

If you have a 1 kW or 2 kW connection, running an electric geyser (2 kW), induction cooktop (1.5 kW), and air conditioner (1.5 kW) at the same time will cause your maximum demand indicator (MDI) to breach your load limit. UPPCL levies heavy penalty fixed charges when MDI exceeds the sanctioned load. Stagger appliance usage or apply for an official load extension on the Jhatpat portal.

6

Kill "Vampire / Standby" Power Draw

Microwaves, TV set-top boxes, chargers, gaming consoles, and computers left on standby mode continuously draw 5W to 15W of power 24 hours a day. Turn off main wall socket switches when appliances are not in active use.
